King Herod, not so great
12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.
Here in the time of Jesus birth the Lord God had to do things to protect Jesus. Here the world wanted to kill Jesus even in his birth. I think this is a act of the Devil because if Devil can beat the Lord he wins all the souls of men. God never lost and never will. Herod was a evil man as I said last time because he did not fear God. Alone that makes a person evil and rotten. Get saved and you won’t need to be evil.
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word; for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”
14 When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt, 15 and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt I called My Son.”[1]
Joe did as the Lord asked and he went to the land he was told to do. He did not ask why Joe hear the word and did what it said to do. We need more of that in the church today. In the news just this week a church is trying to run adds that welcome the Gays and they do not do as the word said and separate. In my own life I had the word and I disobey. It is not good to beat myself up but to not repeat the sins I do. God does share the reason they are to flee and that is to protect Baby Jesus. Herod being the evil man he was he did want Jesus dead.
In Hosea 11 1 Hosea was talking about the Lord and how he brought the people out of the Land of Egypt. Also in this God shows that he knew Jesus was going to be in that land. Jesus was also called out to go back to his homeland and grow up. We do not know when Herod died. I have heard two years, I heard soon after. But Jesus did not leave Egypt till this king died.
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men, was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the wise men. 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying:
Herod is mad that the wise man did not tell the truth and he did not find Jesus, So this man killed every baby in his land. What a horrid man this king was. Like he killed all the babies and did not fell bad about it.
A few things about herod. He was not in the royal line to the Jews and they did not like him as the king or honor him as the king. Herod had people in his family killed to including his kids and wife. He was a wicked man to the core. Like he was like Saddam over in Iraq. It is hard to think of the verse where God puts the kings in power and wonders why he put this pile of trash in. He did repair the temple.
18 “A voice was heard in Ramah,
Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted,
Because they are no more.”
Mathew uses a quote to give a feeling for the Moms in this land justice. As Jacobs wife was sad so were the people sad.
Not a ton to really hang on to here. DO not be evil and rid hearts of evil. Gods protection is on us to.
